Avec le lancement de l’Elinchrom ONE, Elinchrom s’est associé avec des photographes travaillant sur des projets humanitaires. Aaron Jay Young nous parle de sa passion, son approche et l’histoire autour de son projet.
Elinchrom croit au pouvoir de la photographie. C’est pour cette raison que nous profitons du lancement de l’Elinchrom ONE pour partager le travail de photographes, dont la marque admire l’exécution et l’intention derrière. C’est d’ailleurs un grand privilège de mettre en lumière le projet d’Aaron Jay Young qui utilise son art pour attirer l’attention sur des problèmes complexes actuels.
Il faut l’avouer : nous avons tous vécu des mois difficiles avec l’arrivée du Covid. Et pendant cette période, Aaron a capturé l’instant, et plus précisément, les héros de l’hôpital local qui ont fait face à ce virus mortel tout au long de la pandémie.
LE CONTEXTE DE LA PANDÉMIE
« J’ai eu de nombreuses idées différentes pour ce projet, mais comme nous étions au milieu de la pandémie et que tout le monde traversait cela en même temps, je savais que je voulais me concentrer sur cela. Au fil des mois, j’avais vu différentes vidéos sur les professionnels de la santé qui étaient en première ligne et qui devaient faire face à la réalité de ce virus… Ils n’avaient pas le luxe de pouvoir débattre sur la réalité de celui-ci ou de participer aux innombrables débats politiques. Ils étaient occupés à le vivre, en allant travailler chaque jour et en risquant leur propre vie pour prendre soin des autres. C’est pour cette raison que j’ai voulu les présenter.
J’ai le désir de permettre à tout le monde d’être vu et entendu.
Je veux offrir une plateforme pour les personnes opprimées et discriminées, considérées par certains comme « inférieures ». Je souhaite les capturer de ma manière qui me semble la plus vraie : avec un sentiment d’authenticité, de dignité et d’humanité. La déshumanisation est présente à bien des égards, que ce soit dans le système carcéral, le système de santé, ou même via le racisme systématique qui imprègne chaque institution des Etats-Unis. Je pense que je perçois mon travail comme l’antithèse de cela.
Plutôt que de déshumaniser, je veux humaniser mais également capturer la ténacité de l’esprit humain. Chaque fois que je travaille sur ce type de projet ou même dans mon travail au quotidien, je pense constamment au désir de chaque personne d’être vue et entendue. Je pense que nous pouvons tous offrir cette expérience à n’importe quelle personne, tout simplement en étant présent avec eux.»
Aaron étant l’un des premiers photographes à prendre en main l’Elinchrom ONE, la marque a dû s’interroger sur l’expérience de shooting avec ce nouvel éclairage pendant la réalisation de ce projet.
Le retour d’Aaron a été le suivant : « J’aime la légèreté et la petite taille de l’Elinchrom ONE. La façon dont nous avons travaillé l’éclairage sur ce projet est très similaire à la façon dont je travaille habituellement. Je mêle souvent lumière naturelle et lumière artificielle, et il est certain que j’utiliserai le ONE pour de futurs projets. »

THE COVID FRONTLINE HEROES
With the launch of the Elinchrom ONE, we are moved to partner with photographers doing humanitarian personal projects.
Today we catch up with Aaron Jay Young to learn more about his passion, approach, and story behind this project.
At Elinchrom, we believe in the power of photography. For that reason, we chose to view the launch of the Elinchrom ONE as an opportunity to share our platform with photographers whose work we admire not just for the execution but their intent.
We view the ability to highlight the work of photographers who use their art to bring attention to complex issues as a great privilege, and Aaron Jay Young is one of those photographers.
Let’s face it; it has been a tough year in the wake of Covid. But during this time, Aaron set off to really capture this moment, and more specifically, the heroes within his local hospital that have been working in the face of the deadly virus all throughout the pandemic.
THE PANDEMIC BACKGROUND
» went through many different ideas for this project, however since we were in the middle of the pandemic and it was something that everybody collectively was going through at the same time I knew I wanted to focus on that.
I had seen various different videos throughout the months of healthcare workers who were on the front lines, having to deal with the reality of this virus… They didn’t have the luxury of debating whether or not it was real or getting into the countless arguments based on politics… they were busy actually living it, actually showing up every day risking their own lives to care for others.
For this reason, I wanted to feature them.
I’ve got a desire to allow everybody to feel seen and heard.
For me, I’ve got a desire to allow everybody to feel seen and heard. I want to give a platform to people who are oppressed and discriminated against, who some people think of as “less than.” I want to capture them in a way that feels the truest – with a sense of authenticity, dignity, and humanity.
There is an element of dehumanization that occurs in so many ways from our prison system, to the healthcare system, to the systematic racism that permeates through every institution in this country and I guess I see my work as the antithesis to that.
Rather than dehumanize I want to not only humanize but capture the tenacity of the human spirit.
Every time I do any kind of project like this or even in my daily work I am constantly reminded that every single person has a desire to be seen and to be heard and I am constantly reminded that we can all give this experience to any person at any time simply by being present with them.
